Health Education and Relationships through Theater (HEART)

The Health Education and Relationships through Theater (HEART) Study recruited 14-22 year-olds in 2017 through 2020 to test the effects of the HEART program. Full study results have not been published. Yet, our findings were presented at national conferences as the study continued. See those findings here.
The Health Education and Relationships through Theater (HEART) Program is designed to teach young people with specific developmental or intellectual disabilities, including those with autism spectrum disorder and those with mild intellectual disabilities how to build healthy relationships, understand boundaries, interpret romantic feelings, gain sexual health knowledge, and develop positive communication skills, including consent. Participants are engaged in these topics through live theater, role play, games, active discussion, and the participation of a trusted adult.
